Sheila Overbeek, owner of Overboard in Bala describes operating a business in Muskoka as “Living her dream…it doesn’t get any better than this!” A local girl born into the “rag trade”, Sheila developed her ‘flair for fashion’ firsthand, helping out at her Mom’s shop from the time she was a very young girl.

After several years in the shoe trade, including multiple appointments in Montreal and Toronto, and helping on a Cranberry Farm in Nova Scotia with her husband, she returned to Muskoka. Sheila began to organize her dream venture – a top of the line, ladies shop in Bala, Ontario.

Overboard opened its doors in 2011, specializing in fashions from the dock to the dinner party, and has quickly become a luxury shopping destination with unique women’s clothing, accessories, and giftware. Asked what she’s most proud of, Sheila replies “creating a ‘destination shopping experience’; women tell me they plan their schedules around visiting Overboard. That’s pretty special for me.”

“It is a gift to be able to live and work in the place I love most in the world!  It’s home!” describes Sheila.  “I love being able to run an exciting business, while having a little more free time throughout the year to play in the snow or go for a fall hike.”

“To operate a successful business in Muskoka, like any other place, you have to be willing to work hard,” states Sheila. Sheila is quick to provide advice to new business owners. “I love sharing my experience and knowledge of the industry, networking, promoting activity and tourism in Muskoka Lakes.” Sheila often stresses the importance of local business owners working hands on and interacting with their customers.

“Traditionally, the most successful are those that are owner operated, on a daily basis. If I weren’t here, on the floor, interacting with my customers, my company would not be doing as well at this stage of its development.”Overboard 2 scaled 1
