With over 15 years of professional cooking experience and his family spending summers in Muskoka for over 100 years, Kevin Duynstee always knew where he wanted to own his own restaurant. “This region is truly a natural wonder. Muskoka is a world class tourist destination and it should have world class restaurants”, says Kevin. In 2012, Kevin founded “Loondocks”, a casual fine dining restaurant in Port Carling. As Chef/Owner, Kevin is proud to be serving Canadian cuisine with local ingredients, especially to first time visitors to Canada and Muskoka.
For only being in operation just over 5 years, it has not taken long for Loondocks to gain the recognition it deserves. Loondocks received Where Magazine’s, “Best New Restaurants in Canada award”, and is #1 on Trip Advisor, earning the “Certificate of Excellence” every year since they opened. Culture Trip has named Loondocks “Muskoka’s Best Restaurant” every year since 2013, and they received DiRoNA’s “Achievement of Distinction Award in Fine Dining” for 2016 and 2017 (Loondocks is the only restaurant in Muskoka with this award, and one of only 69 in all of Canada).
When asked what advice to give businesses looking to open in the Muskoka region, Kevin acknowledges Muskoka and Port Carling specifically, is an exciting community filled with great people that continues to grow. It is important to brace for busy summers while understanding and planning for the seasonality of the area.
Moving forward, Loondocks will continue to focus on consistency and creating new and exciting dishes while maintaining some of the old classics that guests have grown to love.
